Things to see and do in Melbourne:

  • Have a walk along Southbank, see the biggest Australian casino and huge fireballs every hour after dusk. Here you can find restaurants and snobbish boutiques.
  • Do some shopping and have dinner in a restaurant on one of the following streets:
    • Lygon street (Italian cuisine)
    • Brunswick street (Exotic cuisine, lots of kooky and kinky people)
    • Victoria Street (Asian cuisine - China, Vietnam, Malaysia)
    • Chapel street, South Yarra (see the young guys with their hot cars)
    • Ackland street (young precinct, more of the kooky and kinky types, lots of things happen on Friday and Saturday nights.
  • Not far from Ackland Street there is the famous Saint Kilda Beach, where no one swims (except Russians and Poles) but everyone is walking, jogging, skating and biking.
  • Go shopping in the city around the pedestrian mall on Bourke street, and maybe in Chadstone shopping centre. Check out some bargains in the colorful Queen Victoria Market
  • Visit the Rialto Towers observation deck to see the whole of Melbourne
  • Escape to the Old Melbourne Gaol, you can also book a night visit by candle light

Around Melbourne you can:

  • Have a trip on the real Puffing Billy steam train along the beautiful railway in the bush
  • Have a look at the XIX century gold rush town - Sovereign Hill
  • On Phillip Island you can feed kangaroos and emus (the last attraction is pretty scary). After dusk on Phillip Island you can see the parade of thousands of little fairy penguins
  • Have fun on the challanging curves of the Great Ocean Road, and visit the famous Twelve Apostles rocks. It is better if you would have at least 3-4 hours to walk on other rocks in Port Campbell National Park, it's really worth it!

I also recommend you see museums and galleries in Melbourne, and check out pictures of the ocean and beaches around Melbourne.
If you like animals you can visit one of three Zoos (Melbourne Zoo, Healsville Sanctuary and Werribee Zoo) as well as Melbourne Aquarium. For more details please refer to "Australian animals" section.
